Looking to move my PHPBB from Dreamhost
  • Hello,

Like so many others, I have outgrown the shared hosting provided by Dreamhost, and I'm looking at a small VPS. I run a few small websites, but the elephant on the server is a phpbb version 3 that is near and dear to my heart. Its approaching 1000 users, but never more than 80 online at a time. It moves about a gig and a half of data per day, never more than two, and the database with the search index hovers right around 300 mb. Would a 256 slice be able to handle this?

    Thanks in advance!
  • A 256 should be able to handle that no problem. However, monitor how many Apache processes are spawned if you use it. It seems that the default Apache config gives a lot of processes which end up swapping and degrading performance when activity picks up.

  • As SuperJared suggests, a well-tuned 256 should handle that just fine! I've seen 256 Slices do more without missing a beat.. PickledOnion's Slicehost Articles are a good place to start for a LAMP setup that'll do the job, then you can tweak it from there, based on how your app performs...

  • Take a look at nginx I has proved itself to me and I believe a few others here have posted about their success using it.

  • Need help desperately:

Hello # geeheeb and experts here:

I am not a developer but I do run a few phpbb forums on hostmonster which I set up through their web UI and am thinking to move over to slicehost; I have no thorough knowledge about how to set up a website using slicehost through unix interface and I found it difficult to get my hands on this. Is it possible for someone here walk me through phpbb set up process on here?

Do you use 3rd client like webmin to configure your slice or do you do it through command line? I prefer hostmonst-like UI where everything is visual: database, ftp, email etc.,where do I start to gain that knowledge? Or do I need an expert to walk me through this process?
