Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx NX remote desktop version...
  • 10.04 will be out soon, and an important new feature is the EC2 cloud specific version with NX remote desktop capability built-in. Will Slicehost be offering a prebuilt remote desktop slice with NX up and running, in addition to the usual ubuntu server slice?
  • I just have to ask...why do you want a remote desktop on a server? This isn't Windows...the UI will do nothing to help you manage your servers. Planning on using a slice as the back-end for thin clients?
  • The short answer is yes, a thin client backend. I never had any delusions that a full desktop is necessary for server management. Also, NX 4 which is coming out perhaps in the fall is expected to increase the available client base through a web client that will have Android/iPhone capability (unfortunately the No Machine official free server is free as in beer, so it may not be possible to preload that onto a slice)

The long answer is (at least in some ways) a real cloud desktop similar to Sun's Global Desktop system, with the known performance of NX (compared to VNC/RDP). The new EC2 respin of Ubuntu with NX represents a milestone in that regard, but you can get a real ugly credit card bill if you aren't careful with EC2/S3/AWS.
