Web Panel Options
  • I often get asked this so I thought I'd make a list to redirect people to:

List of panels that can be used on a Slice:

    Most basic

    Free

    In no particular order..

    Not Free

    • cPanel ($15 a month for a vps license, with a 'best try' install service. They prefer if you build your slice with 'centos').
    • Plesk (Complicated pricing ..)

    Cutting Edge/Crazy and Free

    • tight-vnc -- Why not install X11 and/or gnome or KDE on your slice and use it as an office PC away from the office
    • nomachine -- Same thing supposed to be more efficient (haven't tried it), the free version is harder to install than the tight-vnc X server)
  • Nice list, question though - is it worth using a panel?

I just installed for example Webmin which was a very straight forward and simple install, took up only a small bit of space and the process running is around 50MB a 4th of Apache on my Slice. The whole process took me about 10 mins to get up and running (had to also modify my iptables to allow the admin's port for the web interface)

The interface seems pretty straight forward and contains alot more information than phpsysinfo which I have been quite happy with as I mainly watch Swap and Memory usage. However looking at the interface I can't help but think I won't touch more than 5 or 6 of the items at most, where as the other 50 or so things I may never even look at.
  • I'd also add you can toss on Virtualmin to Webmin for Virtual Host management which makes it quite easy.
I'm using 100mb ram with Apache2, MySQL, PHP, Webmin/VirtualMin installed, probably some others are running too.
  • Webmin+Virtualmin here. Does everything I want a panel to do (and more!) and it's not as intrusive as cPanel.

The webmin perl service uses about 5-6 MB on my systems.
  • I just heard of zervex too.

The sound effects on their front page scared me.

  • I have directadmin admin on one slice and webmin/virtualmin on 2 others
  • I'd like to add on the list: ehcp.net .. seems very comprehensive .. works best with the latest Ubuntu. Installs a LAMP stack for you with options for installing things like wordpress.

Installation Instructions .. tut and vid.

I'd probably go through the slice setup article first to lock things down.

  • I guess most of them are not aware of ISP-Control free panel for Debian. Panel is neat and fast.
