New pricing model on the way?
  • http://www.mosso.com/cloudservers.jsp

    Looks like there is a new pricing model (or new options anyways) on the way. At first glance this appears to be cheaper, but I imagine as with EC2 the bandwidth costs will be added extra. IMO this is great timing because Amazon just announced prepaid (1 or 3 years) which add significant savings to their instances (30% and 50% respectively.)

    Or am I missing something?
  • You are correct. Those prices do not include bandwidth costs. More details will be released in the next few days, but I believe they will be the same as CloudFiles bandwidth costs, which you can see here: http://www.mosso.com/pricingfiles.jsp
  • It's a great fit for people that need SLAs or phone support. Also good for existing RS customers, but bundled bandwidth still delivers more value. BW pricing is .08in and .22out.

    That assumes you are using a certain amount of bandwidth. Dev slices or production slices which have low bandwidth usuage would still get a better price on this new model.
  • Yeah, the nice thing is the slicehost manager lets you know how much bw you use. For example my slice has very low BW, so I'm a prime candidate for trying cloudslice :)
  • A week on a 512M instance will only cost you a few bucks, so why not?
  • Do these cloudspace instances have the same setup as slicehost instances; i.e., could you use a cloudspace instance as a testbed and then move your setup back to slicehost when you get it right?
  • Ken,

    The images will indeed be the same between Slicehost and CloudServers. Both services will offer stripped down bare bones images of the following distributions:

    * Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
    * Ubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron) LTS
    * Debian 5.0 (Lenny)
    * Gentoo 2008.0
    * Centos 5.2
    * Fedora 10
    * Arch 2007.08

    In regards to using CloudServers as a test bed and Slicehost for production, there should not be any issues as there will be no difference in the beginning between the images offered. However, keep in mind that Slicehost or Cloud Servers may go in a different direction in the future as they are two separate companies.

    Additionally, we would not be able to facilitate a transfer of your data from Cloud Servers to Slicehost. This would be your responsibility, using a program such as rsync to complete the process.

    Please let us know if you have any further questions.

  • Will CloudServers support all the same configuration options as slices?

    For example, private IPs, unmetered bandwidth between instances, shared IPs for load balancing, backups, cloning instances from backups, etc.?

    In other words, is there anything I can do with a slice that I won't be able to do with a CloudServer?
  • artagesw,

    You would need to speak with Mosso support personnel to get a better understanding of everything they will be offering with their Cloud Servers product. The private IPs and sharing capabilities will be available. As well as backups and the functionality to clone to other slices. In terms of pricing, they would have more information to provide regarding that.

    They can be contacted through live chat at http://www.mosso.com
