slashrun.org: a site for playing with real-time 3d text...
  • Hey slicehosters,

I've been around for a month, lurking and fine-tuning my first 256 slice.
Now that I have a prelease version ready, I invite you to pay a visit: http://slashrun.org

Behind the scenes: Java webstart coupled with opengl (total download under 500K...)
Have fun and send some feedback!

    Ariel

  • Didn't work for me. I'm using Safari on OS X 10.5.5. When clicking "run" a war file downloaded.

  • Thanks for your feedback roshambo.

There was indeed some issues with Java 1.5 and macs.
Hopefully, things should work by now...
  • Thanks, arielm. Unfortunately, still not working for me. Your work looks really interesting, though. Let me now when it's working -- I'd love to check it out at some point.

  • It looks cool. I'll have to play with it at home (and I'll test it on my mac for you.)

I'd suggest putting a more direct description on your site. You say on the site it's ' an explorational bit of software that can be fed with markup data or controlled by script'. You don't ever describe it as being for manipulating 3d text. At least not that I saw. The description you gave in the subject line of this forum is a lot more descriptive of your site's purpose. It needs to be more self-explanatory on your site.
  • Mac OS X 10.5.5, Firefox, Java 1.5. Works nice.
  • Zviki:
Thanks for your feedback, good to know it works on some macs...

    Roshambo:
Quite complicated with Java to know why it works on some systems and not on others, so it's actually good for me to fall on problematic macs.
It would be helpful if you could test these links:
    1) http://slashrun.org/test/test2B.jnlp (should launch a Java web-start app named "the war of the world"... Java 1.5+ required)
    2) If it's not working, then this one should: http://slashrun.org/test/test4.jnlp (should launch a web-start app with some older app know to work on macs... Java 1.4+ required)

    Nomadhacker:
Thanks for your feedback. I agree that things are still somehow vague. All this is only a prelease, so hopefully it will only get better towards launch-date.
  • Doesn't work with Google Chrome.

    Doesn’t work with Google Chrome.

A few questions if you don't mind:
    - which OS are you on?
    - do you have java installed?
    - did you see any item (like "War.jnlp") to open in chrome's "download bar" at the bottom of the screen?

    Thanks for your feedback!
  • Okay, your app now seems to work on OS X for me now, both via Safari and Firefox.

For what it's worth, http://slashrun.org/test/test4.jnlp launches but doesn't draw properly -- I see the topographic lines for a split second and then nothing but beige.

  • thanks roshambo: there was indeed some other weird java issues on macs...

now that hopefully all the technical issues are fixed I can concentrate on updating the content of slashrun.org toward release...
