Create Screencasts
  • Without a doubt, for us that are just getting started in the VPS world having screencasts would be very helpful. I find myself asking questions like crazy and all i want to do is set up a slice. Watching a screencast would be very helpful.

Is there any plans for this type of a request.
  • Hi,

We have thought about is and it is on the list of things to do (sort of).

The main issue is that I don't see any advantage to a screencast over the articles (http://articles.slicehost.com). The content would be the same (there is no point having screencasts that are different from the articles) but you couldn't copy and paste the commands.

I am not sure if I have missed something but I just don't 'get' the point of having a screencast of me typing what is in the articles.

Let me know where my personal understanding is out of whack as it has been requested a few times but, as I say, I just don't see the attraction of watching my terminal while I copy and paste what is in the articles.....

  • I think you're missing the obvious attraction of ... watching your terminal while you copy and paste what is in the articles.

    Instant youtube hit!
  • I personally don't see the point in a screencast. It's much easier to READ and have the ability to copy & paste - screencasts just scream 'FAD' to me...
  • I really dislike screencasts. I much prefer articles because I can follow them at my own pace. I get usually frustrated quickly with screencasts as, by their nature, they're very slow. Having, to pause, rewind, fast-forward, and then try and figure out at which point in the screencast I am is annoying.

As a developer, I prefer to speed over areas with which I'm already familiar and slow down and focus on parts with which I'm not. Written articles facilitate this so much better than screencasts.

  • I think it has to do with verbal vs. written. I agree having the directions written is great for copy and paste, but when doing a screencast you can say much more than what is written. And on a marketing side of things video will raise conversion rates through the roof. What you could do is use Blip.tv and then have a transcription service transcribe the screencasts and then using Blip.tv you can post those through out the Internet. It would be an incredible way to reach out to new users.

    Plus, some people learn visually.

  • Tony,

Good point. I will look at it again although I have no timeframe or promises to make at this point!

  • Depending on how the video is presented you could have the command that's being entered displayed within a textfield that the viewer can copy and paste. I know this is possible with flash and also windows media with javascript embedded in a web page.
