I have a 256 MB slice running Ubuntu Intrepid. I'd like to upgrade the distro to Lucid Lynx. How should I go about it?

According to this "blog entry":http://www.slicehost.com/articles/2009/10/28/ubuntu-karmic-koala-note SH discourages upgrading from the command line. The preferred alternative seems to be backing up everything followed by rebuilding the slice from the control panel.

I understand that rebuilding the slice would require me to configure everything again. I'd like to avoid this.

PS: just to be clear, this is what I mean by upgrading from the command line:

@sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade@
Surprising everything worked great out the door afterwards. Tested all of my php sites and they worked fine. I need to change my logging level though since I'm getting lots of PHP Deprecated and PHP Warning due to the upgrade. Hopefully this will help others.

CentOS 5.4 was officially released yesterday (Oct 21, 2009) and is available as a full download, or as an upgrade via yum. Release notes can be found here: http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.4.

My personal experience so far is good; I have upgraded all 3 of my slices and have not yet seen any issues. However, I can't guarantee that you will experience the same! Be sure to read the release notes to see what's changed before charging gung-ho into an upgrade!

We had a minor issue here with Java on our CentOS 5.3 slices compared to our 5.2 slices.

We have our timezone changed on our slice via /etc/localtime, however on our 5.3 slices the output from java (see Test class below) would show up different:

5.2
Mountain Standard Time
America/Phoenix
1242933746233
2009-05-21 12:22:26.233

5.3
Coordinated Universal Time
Etc/UTC
1242934107902
2009-05-21 19:28:27.902

This is a problem since it effected some time sensitive stuff in our java apps.
Hi all!

I'm a (happy) Slicehost customer. I think that I started with a CentOS 4.3 slice and then moved on to my current slice with CentOS 5.

Although I'm NOT thinking of changing of distribution ("distro") right now, I'm wondering if Slicehost is considering adding openSUSE - http://en.opensuse.org/ - to the list of available distros (namely, the last stable version that is openSUSE 10.3)

Some arguments that I think may be relevant to add openSUSE slices:

- It's a community project (although it is sponsored by Novell)

-It's free (as in "free beer") and free (as in "free speech"): according to http://en.opensuse.org/Download it contains only open source components, but an "Add On CD" is also available with some proprietary software (e.g: Sun Java Runtime Environment)

- It has a 64-bit version

- Like other distros, you may install it as a "text-only" operating system (like other slices are)

- Matter of opinion: it has a nice setup tool (yast)

- There are good online software "package repositories" - http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories - that may also be set up in yast

- The competition (*cof* Linode *cof*) offers it ;-)

So, is openSUSE being considered for inclusion to the list of available distributions for slices at Slicehost? Or are there any reasons to NOT include it?

Are the patches used in this update applicable to the kernel that Slicehost is providing? If so, when can us CentOS users expect an updated kernel... and more importantly, how would we know that one was available and where might we find it?
It's great that Slicehost was quick to support Debian lenny, but I'm starting a production service that is built on etch.
Slicehost dropped etch at the same time they added lenny, so I'm stuck. I don't even have any existent etch machines to clone.

Is it possible to downgrade a new lenny instance to etch?

Am I the only one who laments Slicehost's retirement of etch so quickly, and with no warning?
